Election Prep- 2018

The Interview- BP Election 2018

Hello Neighbors,
I had every intention to title this post “The Interviews” (as in plural), but our candidates simply would not comply with my request. Or, as it seems, with the requests from anyone else here in their attempt to properly access them. This marks the first time I can remember that BP candidates have deliberately gone so far out of their way to avoid any community sponsored vetting and our traditional Meet the Candidates Q & A Event. Rather they have preferred to attempt to ply voters with sweets, a concert, and several casually segregated, (and in my opinion), meaningless assemblies.

Now that I’ve got that off my chest, I’ll give you some insight into this entire fiasco.
As one who has hosted several Meet the Candidates Events, I acknowledged the feedback from both residents and several candidates about getting the same questions downline and in possibly repeating what someone else had already said. The purpose of asking the same questions was one of fairness, and not to have any one candidate feel singled out, etc. So, for this election I had something else in mind (private one-on-one interviews) and starting reaching out to the candidates around the end of September.
During my first sweep, I received interview commitments from Dan Samaria, Jared Susi, and Manny Espinoza. I told them all that I was in the process of contacting the other two candidates and would keep in touch regarding my progress.
Long story made short (or somewhat short for me), Will Tudor (the incumbent) dodged my calls and emails until I finally reached him. (after sending a somewhat shaming email) After relaying what I had in mind, he stated that he “needed 24 hours to consider it.” That was on September 28th and is the last I’ve heard from him. Know that I have asked nothing of Will Tudor for the two years he’s been on the Commission and his deliberate avoidance is troubling. Not the behavior befitting an incumbent, in my opinion.
Now for Betsy Wise or The Great Unknown as I view her.  Since I had no idea who she is, I asked for her phone number so that I could contact her at her convenience. After several cat and mouse emails back and forth between us, I never got her phone number, nor had the opportunity to even explain what I was planning in person. Then, all contact was cut off on her side. The last email I received from her on October 4th stated, “and rest assured I will get back to you.” Well, it’s now 19 days later and I’m still waiting…?... Like Will Tudor, this deliberate avoidance seems contrived and moreover, totally baseless. Neither has legitimate grounds to shun neighbors, nor seem to understand the role of public service. And that is to serve the public’s trust, and that means ALL of the public people. Not just a select few. This is Betsy’s first run at the Commission.
As time is now getting short, I issued a “Last Call” email this past Friday to once again attempt to schedule the remaining interviews. Only Manny Espinoza had the common courtesy to reply and that was to inform me that he was reneging on his previous commitment. Now call me old fashioned, but to me your word is your bond and is part of what forms ones integrity. But, he was polite and good enough to not leave me hanging in the wind, so to speak.  And for that I am appreciative. This is Manny’s second run at the Commission.
Dan Samaria also reneged on his commitment, but in his case, he was on one day, the next off, then on, and then off again. So, a flip flopper one could say. He also asked for “a couple accommodations prior to sitting down for our interview.” These included “that you provide the questions in advance” and that “you provide me with an unedited version of the videotaped interview for my records.” I replied that I would not disclose the questions in advance (as we’ve never done that, and was the same answer I gave him during our last election when he again asked for the questions in advance) but would be happy to provide the video. I then (on October 8th) received a series of odd emails from him asking “who else had agreed to do it” and “if it is only jared and manny it is not worth it for me.” And lastly, “two of the candidates i will beat easy and they are the one i believe u have and one of them i dont trust are being control by a gtoup of people that dont have the residents interest at heart.” This is Dan’s third run at the Commission.
That leaves Jared Susi who visited with me last Thursday evening. The link to his interview is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbReu_Fij74 . This is Jared's first run at the Commission.

Needless to say, what should have been an easy request for access from various neighbors turned into a frustrating run around. I felt the responsibility to share my experiences with you all for the direct purposes of transparency and discovery.  On paper, I have issues with all of the candidates and find myself ill prepared to vote with so little meaningful contributions offered from them.
Talk is cheap, so I put little value in printed pamphlets or other perfunctory campaign promises.  Actions speak louder than words and the actions I’ve observed from some of the candidates have proven to be, petty and segregating, fearful, dysfunctional and as such mostly unworthy in my opinion.

Standing Watch,

Milton Hunter

  1. Thanks for doing this and I appreciate Jared participating. It would have been interesting to hear the answers from the other 4 but it looks like that's not going to happen. Even though the questions covered many topics I still feel the community has been short changed not seeing all the candidates take part in a community meet the candidates event. We live in such a small community where so many residents know on another it's been surprising and disappointing that Betsy Wise, Manny Espinoza, Dan Samaria and especially Will Tudor have refused to come out and address the public. I've lived here over 40 years and there's always been a meet the candidates event. Some of them will be elected and it's a dismal prospect for the Village.

    1. Hi Barbara,
I too would have loved to hear from the others (and their answers) and am somewhat embarrassed to have only secured just one candidate. However, that fault lies elsewhere.

I'm not sure if it's just cowardliness or something else, but I'll tell you that I promised Will that I would not bring up anything regarding his past 2 years. In that he would be treated like the rest. But, still nothing but avoidance.

Our voters deserve much better and need to find their voices and demand change. That, or we'll see another two years of dysfunction from this Commission.

  2. Milton,

Nice job with the interview, the questions were comprehensive and relevant to BP further, I concur with Barbara's comments above.

  3. Wow, a dismal prospect indeed. The four candidates who are acting shady and being elusive already don't deserve our trust, and none are even commissioners yet. Great start (I mean, they could at least PRETEND to be interested in the position). They should be ashamed. If they aren't, well, the rest of are ashamed for them!

    1. It's nice to see you back Brian! A little off topic, but I wanted to relay that the article we posted (well, more you than me) on the No Name Storm has now received over 700 views. Even being several years old, it is still getting recent traffic. Thanks again for all your input and weather expertise.

  4. Barbara I totally agree with what you posted here. Milt incumbents should expect to run on their record and face questions regarding their time in office. That's all part of the job. The fact that they do have a record upon which voters can judge does make them different than first time candidates. If they want to run away from or not deal with that record that is very telling,

    1. Janey,

Of course you're right regarding the expectation for incumbents. But, consider the source for a minute if you will. (sorry for the pun) I was trying to juggle the needs for our voters for the purpose of discovery as opposed to probably doing what should have been done. But knowing how thin skinned and ill-prepared these current Commissioners are in dealing with the public, what choice did I really have?

My error was in thinking that a softer/safer approach may be the way to bring Will to the table. But in hindsight, I was mistaken.

    2. Milt - good points. You at least know you did everything possible to make this thing work and you got nothing but resistance.

  5. From Linda Dillon:

As one of the older residents of Biscayne Park, both in longevity (been here 39 yrs.) and in age (this is anyone’s guess), I really value what you have said, especially as I was not yet clear on which of the 4 remaining candidates would receive my support. I had already decided on one.

For the 2013 election, along with 3 other residents, I coordinated a “Meet the Candidates Night” for the Village. We hosted it at the Recreation Center, had another resident serve as “Moderator” and, as I recall, we had a close to, if not total, standing room only attendance. We served cookies and other sweets along with a variety of hot and cold beverages (no spiked punch ). Most of the baked goods were homemade by our group; but, there were also a few other residents who graciously contributed additional goodies or even a few dollars to help make the event a success. We put together a list of questions to be presented and each candidate responded to random questions pulled from a jar. Paper and pencil were provided and attendees were also encouraged to add questions to the jar. The moderator weeded through all the questions, like the professional he was, which kept things interesting as well as informative. At other such events, I believe like one you hosted, each candidate fielded the same question, which is merely another style for this type of venue. I do not recall ever having a debate forum, something which was suggested for this year and which apparently was not well received by most of the candidates.

Although voting turnout was smaller back then and increased significantly when we changed from having stand alone elections to joining the Nation-wide ones, I cannot remember ever not having some type of “Meet the Candidates” event in Biscayne Park and I am fairly certain certainly there has never been any type of pre-election event where not all candidates participated.

For me, what has taken place this year is beyond belief. While there has been controversy in our small, diverse community throughout its history, in all my years here I have never seen things as contentious as they are now. Perhaps it is merely a reflection of the National scene. In any event, I am deeply disappointed that there have been two select social get togethers with little, if any, real substance and where at least one candidate was not invited or declined to participate. I also am scratching my head over the fact that only one candidate agreed to interview with you.

Anyway, thank you Milton, for writing such an informative article. I think it is the best of yours that I have read to date. I also appreciate that it was one of the shorter ones, too. I think I took up the slack here. My long story short… I truly hope that by election date, something significant will have happened whereby I have a clearer picture of who, in my opinion, will best serve our Village. At the moment I am at a loss.

    1. Hi Linda,

Sorry you had problems logging in. We had standing room only last election too and it has always been a big draw. You know, no one (very few) comes to Commission meetings, turnout is as poor as I can ever remember it, but they do like the MTC Events. That's why it is so disappointing that the candidates (most of them anyway) refused to comply with every source that tried to work with them and being them together.

What do they expect if they get elected?? SMH.

  7. And the games continue. Unless I am missing something it looks like Chuck's link to this blog was taken down on ND. Amazing how that site is loaded with political posts advocating voting a certain way on various issues which is clearly against the rules but a link to another blog is a problem.

    1. Janey,
I'm unaware of what you're referring to, but it's never been a problem in the past. I see no difference now. Probably due to poor moderation of the site, which is fairly common on ND.

    2. UPDATE: There was some confusion with how and where the link Chuck sent to ND was to be done regarding the main feed. So, that is the reason it was pulled. However, I have since created a group and as such it's back up and in compliance.

So, I'll walk back my comment on poor site moderation, it was more an issue of post placement.

  9. I just became aware of an email Tracy Truppman, our Mayor, sent out to select residents. She said, "While you can vote for less than three, I do not recommend this as this can be used as a strategy to provide an advantage to a candidate and is a form of voter suppression." She's right that it is a voting strategy and one that I'm going to use. I'm only voting for Jared. I hope he gets elected and I hope it's for a four year term. He has been active in this community. He has spoken out at Commission meeting and Nextdoor about accountability for the Village, Commissioners, our staff and our vendors. He has volunteered at community plantings, showed up at community events and appears at various board meetings. He seems committed to finding solutions to some of our problems and some ideas to just make things better. One example is more walking paths. It's an idea P & P has been promoting for a long time. We've had two years of nothing. Two wasted years with no enthusiasm, no oversight or accountability from this Commission or Manager.

I've never undervoted before and I've voted in every election. This is not voter suppression - this is my protest vote. The others don't deserve it.

Will Tudor, Dan Samaria and Betsy Wise have all come up with excuses why they won't participate in a community forum open to all candidates. It's disrespectful to the community and only makes them look like they don't want to be questioned with other candidates present. Wouldn't you think they would want to get their message out? Do they have a message? We've had two years of nothing. Two wasted years with no enthusiasm, no vision, no oversight or accountability from this Commission or Manager.

I've never undervoted before and I've voted in every election. This is not voter suppression - this is my protest vote. Tudor, Wise and Samaria don't deserve my vote.

  11. Ditto everything Barbara said! And - it was truly disingenuous to see Tracy trivialize the very real problem of voter suppression. The personal choice of not voting for certain candidates could hardly be classified as voter suppression. Voter suppression as most of us know, is something done TO the voter, not by the voter.

  12. Why are these people running. If they don’t want the public to know about them. Do they get special privileges. Does that mean they don’t have to put a driveway in Tudor. Hasn’t put one in. If he loses will he have to put a driveway in.

    1. Hi Ginny,
I'm not sure why some of these candidates are running. It seems like their avoidance of any and all public vetting is to not be exposed. However, they will be fully exposed once in office, and then it's too late. But, that seems the way of it.

      Delete
  13. Ginny very good question. The answer to which we can only guess. For at least one of them it seems a need for attention and self-promotion. For another it seems nothing more than resume padding or the next thrill. Not a clue why the 3rd one is running since as an incumbent he has nothing to run on. We have a sad history here of not taking our elections as seriously as we should. Not holding candidates and elected officials to the highest possible standards. So now here we have it. Three candidates who refuse to face tough, on the record questions. At least 2 of them, God willing not 3, will be making serious, tough decisions that affect our finances, future and quality of life. Sad and scary and their supporters just don't get how serious, how bad this could get.

  14. I agree with janey and Barbara. Voter suppression by is very common in this election. I didn’t think it includes Biscayne Park.

  15. There was a banner hanging on the front of Betsy's house earlier today that I believe violates BP code. It exceeds the size of a political sign, and it is not a headquarters sign, therefore it's not allowed. It appears that she believes that the rules don't apply to her or she doesn't understand the code. Either way these are qualities that I don't wish to see in a Commissioner.

    1. Not that I would know firsthand, but from what I've heard and read from Betsy, she's clueless as to the people and issues here. Seemingly more interested in pushing her own agenda and telling people she's "awesome." Keep that sign handy so we can check back later to see if anything on it becomes to reality.

The three of them have run a discriminatory campaign, excluded the other candidate running and for what reason? Sad we have no better choices.

  16. I agree with Chuck that Betsy's large campaign banner is a code violation. Our Village Manager and attorney don't think there is a problem with the sign. I think there's a problem with them. Go see for yourself. Her house is across the street from the recreation center's main entrance. This is an email I sent to Betsy:

"You probably think this was a clever move on you part but it exposes you as someone who is very willing to use every loophole to your advantage. Our code states that you can have a larger sign designating a campaign headquarters. You've decided to make it a campaign sign for you and two other candidates.

You might know already that our illustrious village attorney wasn't clear "what a headquarters sign" was but you know. Our code may not have been airtight but you were smart enough to sneak it in. Why follow the accepted rules when you can get around them.

You might get elected but you've already shown your colors. You're running for what's good for Betsy - not what's good for Biscayne Park and that's sad.

Maybe you didn't read our sign codes and this is just a mistake. If that's the case then remove your banner, play fairly and show you have ethics.

    Do the right thing.

  18. I was musing about a name for Betsy since she is a wild card and I'm surprised Tracy backed her because of that, in fact I think it was a huge mistake on Tracy's part that will bite her in the A.. in the end, pardon the pun.
So I guess you could call Betsy a joker since she was a stand up comic.

  20. Janey,
    Continued from Next Door.
Well it's going to be interesting, not good for the Village mind you.
I didn't think Tracy would give up the title myself but I suspect that what you suggest may in the works. Tracy in the long run will probably regret giving up the title and that could lead to issues between Betsy and Tracy.
For the record Betsy indicated to me that she would not accept being Mayor (she spent 5 minutes spinning this tale) and Tracy was too emotional to handle the job, so that leaves Will, Jenny and Dan if she was being truthful.
Oh, I just remembered she is a Verbal strategist.

    PS
As I said it's going to be interesting. Does Betsy realize she is going to have to sit through at least 48 meetings of 3 hours or more! Plus workshops, meetings that get continued, budget hearings, meetings with the Manager, meetings in the shade, etc. Talk about going from 0-100, I'm not sure she thought this through.

Betsy it's not too late you proved you can win an election you can still step aside, think about it.
